I knew that bullying was a very serious issue and should not be taken lightly, but doing research on the topic expanded my knowledge on the topic and also made my ideas more thorough. Throughout the whole experience I think the most important facts that I found out included: bullying is such a serious topic that 45 states have enforced anti-bullying laws; bullying has an impact on the the victim, no matter the type of bullying; also, 65% of bullying is unreported...imagine the numbers we would have if 100% were reported! The most surprising research I found was that not only do the victims of bullying have long term effects, but so does the bully. It is a lose-lose situation. In 2003, South Carolina was ranked #10 with bullying in America, which is very high. Since 2003, South Carolina has some anti-bullying laws intact. For example, one of the many include: "H4758 (2008) allows a high school student who is the victim of physical abuse, harassment, or stalking by a classmate during school hours or otherwise resulting in a restraining order to transfer with the consent of the student's school district to another high school within or out of the district within thirty school days of the restraining order being violated, without any loss of eligibility to participate in interscholastic activities at the school to which the student transfers." (State and Federal Bullying Information) I still have a question, what has made bullying increase so much in the last few years? What is it with this generation? Doing this blog has made me feel more toward my topic. I knew it was very serious, but I did not know that it caused 165,000 kids to not attend school each day due to the fear of bullying.
