Paraphrase: Kids and teens look up to their parents as a figure for them to follow. Kids look to them for advice and to feel secure about the situation; in this case bullying. You probably think that kids should stick up for themselves and solve their own problems, but in the situation of bullying, it is better if you fight back against the bully. Neglecting the situation and not getting involved in the problem could cause problems for your child later on in life and for the rest of their life such as: trusting and forming relationships.

Summary of the Article:  If you do not help your child get through the bullying situation when or if they go through it, then it could lead to damage to the relationship that you have with your child. Some signs to look out for if you think that someone is getting bullied include: withdrawal, sudden drop in grades, a refusal in going to school, staying away from kids that used to be friends,  complaining of headaches and/or stomachaches quite often, crying episodes, and unexplained bruises. Bullying builds or makes a victim fearful and afraid.

Source Analysis: This author uses basic infomation to get their point across. They want everyone to understand the article so they can get the point across. The author starts with the question, "What is bullying?" With this question, the author answers it, and then he expands on it to give the reader more information about the topic no matter how much they know.

Paraphrase: Victims of bullying are more vulnerable to be depressed, anxious, and suicidal. If they go to school (some do not go because of the fear of being bullied) they do not do well. They are more prone to fighting, being under the influence with drugs, and carry weapons. When a teenager is bullied, it can leave an impact; it leaves an imprint in their brain that throws their hormones even more out of whack than they already are.

Summary of the Article: This article talks about what bullying does to a teen and how it affects them based on prior research. They also talk about doing the research and what they found out from the tests. One researcher, Martin Teicher, did a test with 1,000 children who were verbally abused and when he got the results back  he saw that the kids who were bullied reported more symptoms of  depression, axiety,  other psychiatric disorders, etc.

Source Analysis: In this article uses emotion to pull the reader in. This article is loaded with great information, but in order to get it you would have to read the article. This article gets people to read it by drawing their attention in to make them feel the pain. The author does not want you to bully, so telling the audience what happens would be a good way to have them stop; which is what he does.

Chart and Citation

This chart is showing the comparison between the years 1999 and 2003 of only reported bullying incidents. The biggest increase is the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, increasing by about 3% each. Bullying has been on the rise recently, and this graph is only showing the reported incidents...imagine what it would be like today if it included every single incident.

Author's quote:  "Trusting a child or teenager with a computer is much like trusting them with a car. Their inexperience can lead them to avenues that they may not know what to do with while they’re alone in their room."

Paraphrase: This quote is very powerful for my topic, because it is true. When a computer is given to a student, it is the perfect option for them to make fun of someone or to pick on them online or on a social networking site; especially when no one is with them. Just like the quote: "Character is doing the right thing when no one is watching."Without the knowledge on something, it can lead to children or teens more likely to making mistakes (in this case being bullying on the computer) and then regretting them in the long run.


Summary of the article: The article talks about how cyber bullying has increased and now how it is starting to become a problem with social networking sites and also texting. Cyber bullying has become a big problem of many people slowly over time. In the article it states a quote from Dr. Kimberly S. Young: "The Internet has been called a big city with no police."

Source Analysis: In this article the author uses different ways to intrigue the audience, other than just boring them with facts. One thing that I noticed the author used, was quotes. The author used these quotes to make the article more appealing with information. When you see a quote by a professional in the topic, you tend to use that source more. Also, the author used a picture to draw more emotion toward the topic and the article.

Author’s quote: “If your child is the victim of a bully, he may suffer physically and emotionally, and his schoolwork will likely show it. Grades drop because, instead of listening to the teacher, kids are wondering what they did wrong and whether anyone will sit with them at lunch. If bullying persists, they may be afraid to go to school. Problems with low self-esteem and depression can last into adulthood and interfere with personal and professional lives.
 Bullies are affected too, even into adulthood; they may have difficulty forming positive relationships. They are more apt to use tobacco and alcohol, and to be abusive spouses. Some studies have even found a correlation with later criminal activities.”

Paraphrase: Bullies and victim of bullies both have different effects. The victim’s mind and emotions fluctuate from high to low because their self-esteem is out of whack. Bullies are also affected, but in a different way. Studies show that  bullies have a negative for the future; they tend to be more likely to alcohol and tobacco, have trouble with creating good relationships, tend to be physical wives/husbands, and also more likely to be involved with crimes.

Summary of Article: In this article, the author states, “Teasing becomes bullying when it is repetitive or when there is a conscious intent to hurt another child.” 20-30% of students are involved in bullying, either the bully or the victim of the bullying. This article talks about characteristics of those bullied, to inform those reading, someone who is more likely to be a target rather than another. This article also has signs to look for of someone who could potentially be bullied; this is helpful for parents if they are concerned if their child is being bullied or not. Lastly, this article talks about trying to help , stop, or slow down the problem.

Source Analysis: This author does not give a lot of strategies in this article, but some of which that he uses, include: research and pathos. The author uses research and facts because they want to get it out there that is is serious and could be prevented or slowed down. The author includes signs of someone being bullied. I think that the author included this because he wants to help, and he wants people to become aware and know what to do when they come across this situation.

Author’s quote: “Mean-girl behavior, typically referred to by professionals as relational or social aggression and by terrified parents as bullying, has existed for as long as there have been ponytails to pull and notes to pass (today’s insults are texted instead). But while the calculated round of cliquishness and exclusion used to set in over fifth-grade sleepover parties, warfare increasingly permeates the early elementary school years.”

Paraphrase: There is a movie that came out in 2004, Mean Girls, that is about the popular girls in school that did not think anyone was “good” enough to fit in with them, so they bullied them; which is what the author’s word choice means with “Mean-girl behavior.” This type of behavior has been around for a long, long time, but it has increases from beginning in 5th grade, to moving into younger children.

Summary of Article: A girl, Scarlett, has a learning disability which gives her a bigger tendency to get picked on; specifically by the "Mean Girls." Bullying is on the rise and has been going up for a little while. Bullying that used to start to be seen in fifth grade is now being seen upon the younger ages of elementary school. More than half of parents are afraid that their child/children will get bullied. Everyone needs to learn that bullying is not good!

Source Analysis: In this article, the author uses an immensive amount of persuasive techniques and strategies to make the article more interesesting. The authore refers to the movie Mean Girls as a technique. Also, I believe that the author uses bias to get his point across that how much bullying has increased and how it is such a serious issue.

What I Want To Know About My Topic

 When researching, not only do I want to find information to inform my audience, but I want to research on information that is new to me. Some of the question I am hoping to answer while doing my research includes the following: Which one type of bullying affects people the most negatively? How does being bullied as a child affect someone’s behavior for the future? What if bullying was never known, how would the way that we think about someone and the things that we say to people change? Should those who bully deserve to be punished? Why do people bully? I ponder these questions in order to come  up with a logical reasoning behind this torture and madness. What do the victims of bullying do to deserve such torture? What goes through a bully's mind in order for them to put that kind of pain and suffering on someone so innocent?

What I Know About My Topic

Bullying has become more serious and has impacted more students across the world in the past few years. Bullying is not just punching someone in the face; it also consists of cyber, mental, verbal, and also ruining someone’s possessions.  I know that the attempted bombing at Socastee High was caused because the student was bullied. Bullying was also the cause of many incidents, including: Columbine, the  Virginia Tech shooting,  and the Rutgers University freshman who was secretly filmed in his dorm room. Many, many teens and children are afraid to go to school every day because of the fear that they are going to get bullied. Bullying does not only hurt on the outside, but it also hurts on the inside. Cyber bullying has increased recently because of the amount of children starting out early with computers and using them, such as: Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Formspring, and just IMing. Bullying affects millions upon millions of people.

The Story Behind My Topic Choice

You know the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?” Well, this is not necessarily true. Every day kids are afraid to go to school because of bullying; they do not want to have to face their bully another day. On the news every day I hear a different story on a different teen or child that was bullied to death. Seeing all of these stories can leave an impact on a person realizing how much of an issue it has become. Teens and children think it is a joke to make fun of someone or to physically hurt them, but it is not. I chose this topic because I feel that it is an important issue that needs to be taken more seriously and people need to become more aware of what goes on around them. Bullying not only effects people at the time it is occurring, but it also has long term effects on someone.
